Newbury Building Society is delighted to announce that its Didcot branch has won a prestigious Business & Community Award (BACA).
The Society won the Best Volunteering Practice category in the Business Sector. Sponsored by Soha Housing, other shortlisted nominees were Sainsbury's in Didcot and the Science & Technology Facilities Council.
The BACAs recognise and reward excellence amongst local businesses, community groups and young enterprise, open to organisations, businesses, charity, community groups and young people, in and around the Didcot area. The awards are the brainchild of Didcot First, which has been working for the local community since 2006 with thousands of people benefitting from their activities.
The Society’s Didcot branch has been involved in numerous community activities during 2016. The branch continues to take part in the popular Didcot Christmas Street Fair and supported Play2Give’s football tournament at Oxford City Football Club and the Wallingford Carnival, helping to raise money for local causes.
In branch, staff members have sold tickets on behalf of the local firework display, Abingdon Air Show, Newbury Show and a Tudor Banquet (for the Didcot Christmas Street Fair). Charity boxes are positioned inside the branch to collect for Macmillan and Pink Ribbon Foundation, and members of staff encourage customers to buy a wristband on behalf of Play2Give, the Oxfordshire based fundraising organisation. A magazine for Hagbourne Primary School, one of the branch’s Junior Newbury Building Society (JNBS) schools, has been printed for free, and the local Scout groups’ Christmas post box is popular during the festive season. Representatives from the group collect and deliver in the local area for a small donation.
Sonja Roostan, Didcot branch Office Manager, said: “We were delighted to win the award as it reflects how hard we work for local charities; not just our branch but the Society as a whole. We will be donating the prize money to Helen and Douglas House, who the branch will be supporting from January 2017. Their mission is to enable young people with life-shortening conditions, to live as well and as fully as possible, and to support their needs and wishes.”
