Last week, we marked National Apprenticeship Week by bringing together some of our current and former apprentices to chat with their colleagues about the power of professional development.

National Apprenticeship Week was launched in 2008 and aims to highlight the impact that apprenticeships bring to individuals and businesses. This year's theme was 'Skills for Life', focussing on the long-term value apprenticeships equip people with.

Real stories and experiences

The event created space for employees to speak openly with apprentices across from across the Society, gaining insight into their learning journeys and understanding how apprenticeships have shaped their development, confidence, and career paths.

The drop-in also welcomed managers interested in how apprenticeships can support skills growth within their teams and how on-the-job training can unlock talent, improve confidence, and build long-term capability.

Watching our apprentices share their experiences - their pride, curiosity, and ambitions - reminded me exactly why apprenticeships matter. For me, it also felt particularly special because I'm at the start of my own apprenticeship journey. Apprenticeships create space for people to challenge themselves, question, and to build capability in ways that are meaningful personally and professionally.

Current and former apprentices, Jonah, Kelly, Chelsea and Cara were on hand to speak with employees face-to-face and online.

Our commitment to development

At Newbury Building Society, we believe apprenticeships are for everyone. From those just starting out, to those changing direction, to those looking to build new skills at any stage of their career. National Apprenticeship Week provided the perfect opportunity to recognise the contribution our apprentices make and to shine a spotlight on the value of continued learning.

A huge thank you to all colleagues who joined the event, and especially to our current and former apprentices for sharing their stories.
