This year marks a remarkable milestone for Newbury Building Society as we celebrate 170 years of supporting our members, our communities, and our colleagues.
170 years old: and just getting started!
The Society was established in the heart of Newbury in 1856 to help local people save and buy homes at a time when these concepts were still relatively new and purchasing your own home remained out of reach for many ordinary people. Since then, we have remained true to the principles on which the Society was built: helping people buy their homes, and find a home for their savings.
Over the last 170 years, we have navigated periods of significant social and economic change with our members firmly at the heart of our decisions, including two World Wars, economic crises, major advances in technology and of course, a global pandemic. And while we may have swapped telegrams for technology, our commitment to supporting people to achieve their financial goals is still very much the same.
We remain extremely proud of our local roots and the positive impact we continue to make through charitable partnerships, community initiatives, and providing face-to-face advice on the high street through our network of branches. These connections with real people reflect our belief that investment in communities helps people and businesses alike to grow and develop.
170 years is a tremendous achievement and a testament to the generations of members, customers, and colleagues who have been part of our journey. While much has changed since 1856, our commitment to helping people achieve their financial goals and supporting our communities remains as strong as ever. We are incredibly proud of our heritage and excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.
Ultimately, our success over the decades would not have been possible without the trust and loyalty of our members, and the dedication of our colleagues. Together, they have helped shaped Newbury Building Society into the organisation it is today - one which is proud of its heritage, but proudly forward-thinking, too.
