What being a member means

What are the benefits of joining Newbury Building Society?

As a mutual organisation, everything we do is guided by one simple principle: putting our members first.

Whether it’s enhancing our products, supporting the communities you live in, or creating new ways for you to have your say — we’re always thinking about how to make your experience better.

Here are four benefits of being a Society member:

Savings

We offer a range of savings accounts, and our friendly qualified savings advisers can help you discover the right one for your savings goals. If you've been a member for a year or more, you can also open our Existing Member Account

Managing your accounts is easy too, with a choice of face-to-face service in our branches, our online system or our mobile app

Mortgages

Every mortgage is different, and we treat them that way.

  • We lend up to age 90 on all our standard mortgages.

  • Every application is reviewed by a person, not a computer - which means we look at the whole picture.

  • Already a mortgage customer? You’ll get access to exclusive deals - no extra fees, no new applications, and support from our Product Switch Team.

  • Plus, once your mortgage has completed, you can open our Existing Member Account.

See our range of mortgages here.

As a mutual organisation owned by our members, not shareholders, you have a real say in how we operate.

We’re committed to building long-term relationships that deliver meaningful outcomes, and it shows: some of our members have been with us since the 1930s!

We believe in open dialogue. Whether it’s at our Annual General Meeting (AGM), through our Member Forum, or at our Member Talk events, we’re here to listen, share our plans, and learn how we can do better.

Being a mutual also means we’re always looking for ways to improve your experience, we welcome your feedback when things go well and also when there’s room for improvement.

We always welcome your feedback, which you can provide here.

We’re extremely proud of our roots as a traditional, high street building society. We're equally committed to maintaining our high street presence and providing you with a choice of digital services when you need them.

We're continuing to maintain and invest in our branches so they’re more comfortable, modern places to visit and work as part of our 'bricks and clicks' ethos.

We also recognise the need to respond to changes in the world, and in the way you want choice in the way you deal with your accounts. That's why we're continuing to invest in digital innovations to improve your experiences with us - our myaccounts mobile appOneBanx machine, and ReciteMe web toolbar are examples.

Exceptional customer service starts with exceptional people.

Customer excellence is at the core of everything we do. Whether you reach out online, visit a branch, or give us a call, you’ll always connect with a real person who’s ready to help.

We are the only bank or Building Society in the UK to have achieved a ServiceMark with Distinction Accreditation from the Institute of Customer Service, through independent assessment conducted by the Institute.

We were named Trusted Quality Provider at the prestigious UK Customer Satisfaction Awards 2025, beating national companies including BT, John Lewis and Legal & General and took home the awards for Best Building Society and Best Building Society Savings Provider at the British Bank Awards 2025. These awards are based entirely on customer feedback, making them extra special.
