Happy birthday to our Hungerford branch - 40 years young this month!
Hungerford branch opened on the 7 February 1986, becoming the third Newbury Building Society branch to open in Berkshire, following our branches in Newbury (of course!) and Thatcham.
127 High Street has a long and interesting history, dating all the way back to 1671. The building was previously used as a general store in the early 1800s, before becoming a furnishings and ironmonger in the 1910s, where it sold everything from sporting goods, to dog biscuits! You can learn more about the history of the building here.
Later, the building was used by a variety of organisations including Southern Electricity Service, before finally becoming home to Newbury Building Society in 1986. In 2003, the branch was refurbished, and five years later the Society added a new private appointment room, expanding into the building next door.
Local ties are strong as ever
Hungerford branch has always played an important role in the local community, getting involved in a wide range of events, including the Hungerford Victorian Extravaganza. Many will remember the old Newbury Building Society hot air balloon making appearances at local events!
Similarly, the branch has also supported a number local organisations and groups since 1986, including running financial education sessions at John O’Gaunt School and sponsoring Hungerford Town FC.
Charity support is another important part of the Society’s presence in Hungerford, and the branch have been partnered with Prior’s Court (registered charity no. 1070227), the specialist school for young people with complex autism, for eight years. Employees and members have raised money annually through cake sales, sponsored walks, competitions, and much more – raising over £10,000 since 2020.
You’re invited to our birthday party!
We’d love to see our members in branch for a birthday cupcake on 6 or 7 February. * We’ll also be giving a special, surprise birthday present to the 40th customer who visits us during our birthday week (commencing 2 February).
We hope to see you there!
*Whilst stocks last.
