Revamped playground in the pipeline for Thatcham-based primary school

Friends of Spurcroft has been granted £500 from Newbury Building Society’s Community Support Scheme to help support the upgrade of its outdoor equipment for Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils at Spurcroft Primary School in Thatcham.

The play area development will see the implementation of new large scale climbing frames and rope structures to help encourage imagination play, strength, balance and hand eye coordination.

Harriet Havelin, a member of Friends of Spurcroft said: “Local and smaller projects and charities struggle the hardest when it comes to fundraising as they are often overlooked by people wanting to support the larger more public charitable causes. Without schemes such as the Community Support Scheme many local projects would have little external support with their fundraising efforts.”

Harriet continued: “School PTA groups have two primary goals - to raise money for the school and provide social events for the community. Not only are the funds that we generate so greatly needed at a time when school budgets are extremely tight but, in this digital age, we provide great opportunities for families to leave their screens behind and spend some time talking and socialising together and with friends. Thanks to the Newbury Building Society, Friends of Spurcroft will be able to provide a thoroughly entertaining summer social event for the whole community to enjoy!”

Friends of Spurcroft works to raise funds for projects which fall outside the primary school’s budget by hosting popular events such as the annual Summer Fete, parent quiz nights, and much more.

Emma Simms, Marketing and Communications Manager at Newbury Building Society said: “We are delighted we could help improve the outdoor play space – the heart of any school – and we hope the students of Spurcroft Primary School enjoy their new exciting and modern play equipment.”

Further information about the Society’s Community Support Scheme and eligibility requirements can be found on its dedicated webpage. The deadline for the next intake of consideration is Sunday 5 May 2019.
