Newbury Building Society thanked by local appeal for its charitable support

Newbury Building Society has been recognised by the Rosemary Appeal committee for its support in the realisation of The Greenham Wing at West Berkshire Community Hospital.

Roland Gardner, CEO of Newbury Building Society, was presented with a framed certificate of thanks from committee member, Dr Rob Tayton, who went on to reveal the Society processed over 1500 donation transactions during the two-and-a-half-year fundraising appeal.

Talking to the Newbury Weekly News, Dr Tayton commented: “The staff at Newbury Building Society managed the work with kindness and efficiency and this was one of the factors which made the Rosemary Appeal a great success.”

The appeal raised more than £5.5 million to construct a high-spec renal dialysis unit and a cancer care unit; a lifeline for patients based in West Berkshire, Hampshire and South Oxfordshire who had to travel to the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading, for treatment.

Since it was opened at the end of July by the Duchess of Gloucester, 29 patients have benefitted from the renal unit, while a new state-of-the-art CT scanner recorded 500 scans in the first month.

Roland said: “The success of the Rosemary Appeal is something for which the West Berkshire community will always be eternally grateful to the two charities involved. It was a pleasure for the Society to play a small part by helping with the banking arrangements. I was both surprised and delighted to receive a certificate of recognition and it can be seen taking pride of place in the banking hall of our Newbury branch.”

Committee members Dr Paul Millard and David Ball (Newbury Cancer Care), and Dr Keith Endersby (Newbury and Thatcham Hospital Building Trust) attended the presentation alongside Tracy Goodall (manager for the Newbury and Thatcham Hospital Building Trust). Sian Dennis, Nicola King-Head and Matt Harris represented Newbury Building Society.
