Good will at Christmas gifts £1500 to local foodbank

As part of a December fundraising push, employees of Newbury Building Society’s Alton branch raised an astonishing £1504.38 for their partner charity, Alton Foodbank.

The team spent a wet and windy Monday collecting generous donations from kind shoppers in Alton Sainsbury’s, accumulating £752.19. The Society then fund-matched the amount raised to give a new total of £1504.38.

The team also visited the foodbank’s warehouse to pack Christmas food boxes for people in need. In total over 70 boxes were filled and over 800kg of food distributed. In addition, the branch collected food donations at this year’s Christmas tree festival, hosted at St Lawrence Church, Alton.

Ian Dane, Project Manager at Alton foodbank said: "It is important for the Alton Foodbank not only that we raise funds to support the ongoing costs of the charity but we also highlight to the town that we have a foodbank and the need for it is growing. By holding a collection at Sainsbury's in December, we not only raised funds but also highlighted the needs the foodbank seeks to address. Working with the team from the Newbury was really encouraging as it demonstrated just how committed both the residents and a local business are in supporting the community in which we live."

Becky Reynolds, Branch Manager said: “The Alton team and I enjoyed spending time helping to raise money and awareness for Alton Foodbank. It is great to see how supporting and generous the town is, and we look forward to seeing all the good work the foodbank will do with the money raised.”

Julie Harness, Customer Service Adviser agreed: “It was great to see the how generous our community have been with all the donations the foodbank have received. I am sure the food parcels will make a huge difference to families in need in Alton this Christmas.”
