Floodlight switch-on for Hungerford Rugby Club

Newbury Building Society was delighted to attend the switch-on of the newly installed floodlighting at Hungerford RFC – after donating £750 towards the project at the beginning of 2016.

The club has seen significant growth over the past 10 years which has since identified a number of limitations within training facilities. An inadequate supply of lighting meant the club was unable to provide any mid-week training for Under-13s to Under-15s junior teams. The seniors were also often forced to relocate and use the all-weather pitch at a local secondary school.

The one-off donation of £750 from the Society helped fund a larger campaign the rugby club undertook to make the floodlights a reality.

Rob Cox, Chairman of Hungerford FC said: “Hungerford RFC would like to thank Newbury Building Society for their very generous contribution to the floodlight fund. Although only officially opened on the 11th December, the floodlights have been in constant use since September and have been of significant benefit to players from age 13 to Adult and have proved a real asset to the community. Many thanks from the committee and members.”

Eve McDowell, Mobile Mortgage Adviser at Newbury Building Society said: “It was an absolute pleasure to attend the switch-on of such a highly anticipated addition to the club’s current facilities. Hungerford RFC is a much valued community-based team, with players – of all ages – hitting the field to play a sport they love regularly. The floodlights were needed to continue offering training and sporting events at the club, and donating £750 was a very easy decision for us to make. We look forward to watching the club continue to flourish and make good use of their improved lighting.”

Hungerford RFC is one of the largest sports clubs in the local area, and currently has an active playing membership of 250 children, and over 100 male and female adults playing competitive, veteran and touch rugby.
