Newbury Building Society was delighted to award Basingstoke’s local Parkinson’s branch £375, following a successful application to the Society’s Community Support Scheme.
The charity applied for financial support for its ‘Loud and Clear’ speech therapy sessions, a group activity designed to improve confidence with speech to help be understood more clearly, and Tai-Chi exercise classes which have been proven to enhance strength, movement control, balance, stride length and reach.
Hosted at Popley Fields Community Centre, both activities offer a safe and welcoming environment with access to specialist care for local people in the Basingstoke and Deane area living with the condition.
Len Potts, Health and Social Support representative for Parkinson’s UK said: “Support from local Parkinson’s branches is vital in helping today’s sufferers manage their condition better. In reality, the search for a cure, although welcome and necessary, will probably be too late for them. In the current economic climate, imposed resource constraints inevitably reduce the support available to our members. Schemes such as that provided by the Newbury Building Society help us to bridge some of the gaps.''

This is a charity we have great admiration for and its work within the community is invaluable in helping improve the lives of local people living with the condition. We hope our donation helps fund the ‘Loud and Clear’ and Tai-Chi classes for the rest of year, and continues to assist those who need it.”
The Community Support scheme, which was launched in 2017, provides financial assistance to a wide range of local organisations involved in improving community life within its branch towns. Typical award amounts start from £100 with a cap of £500. Applications for the Society’s Community Support scheme funding are considered twice a year in May and November, and an application form can be found on the dedicated webpage. Projects that promote and encourage sporting activity and in the arts, support education and development, and benefit the local environment within the Society’s branch towns will be considered.
