Financial literacy sessions given a boost thanks to local scheme

Citizens Advice West Berkshire has been awarded £500 from Newbury Building Society’s Community Support Scheme to help fund the running of 20 financial literacy sessions. 

The one-to-one bespoke financial money management lessons will help the charity’s most vulnerable clients better manage their finances. The sessions will be coordinated by trained volunteers and supervised by employees.  

Sue Mackie, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice West Berkshire added: “It is important to be able to help move clients forward. This grant will enable us to give some of our most vulnerable clients the in-depth budgeting skills they need. We are very grateful to Newbury Building Society for supporting our initiative.”  

Newbury Building Society’s Community Support Scheme supports local charities and organisations fund ongoing projects and events. Successful applications have included educational centres looking to improve its facilities, elderly outreach programmes, recreational programmes for vulnerable young adults and playschemes for disabled children.

The Community Support Scheme was launched to help initiatives such as this and we are delighted to support the charity’s 20 money management lessons. We hope our small contribution will go some way in helping others.”  

Based in central Newbury, Citizens Advice West Berkshire is a local, independent charity offering free and impartial advice to local people on a range of issues such as employment, debt, housing and money management. 

Moving into its third year, applications for Newbury Building Society’s Community Support Scheme funding are considered on a bi-annual basis. The next deadline for submissions is in early May. Visit the Society’s website or pop into a local branch for further information.
