Newbury Building Society has awarded the Boxford History Project £250 from its Community Support Scheme fund to help exhume a small villa floor - dated 360 AD - which was unearthed during a historical community dig in 2017.
Described by the project as the “most important Roman mosaic find in the last fifty years”, the one-off donation will help fund the protection of the artefact during excavation, professional fees for supervision, finds analysis and an academic report.
John Hayward, a member of the project said: “Newbury Building Society is a well-respected organisation known for supporting families and communities in the area. Many local projects have difficulty raising significant funds especially at a time of financial constraint. By supporting a wide range of projects, the Community Support Scheme provides much needed funding to the benefit of the community. We are absolutely delighted with the donation and in helping us to complete this exciting project.”
The excavation will commence summer 2019 and will be led by professional archaeologists and supported by a large volunteer workforce.
