Financial boost for The Countess of Brecknock Hospice’s twilight walk

Newbury Building Society was delighted to donate £350 to The Countess of Brecknock Hospice to support its flagship sponsored walk, 10@10 Late Night Walk 2018, in Andover.

The charity applied for financial support through the Society’s Community Support Scheme to help fund the hiring of portaloos – a costly but much needed expense to help ensure the comfort of those participating.

165 walkers and 25 volunteers joined the charity for the night time trek of 5 or 10 which started at 10pm and finished just before 3am. In a sea of neon clothing, fluorescent face paint and flashing accessories, for the first time in its running the event stemmed away from its female-only roots and men were invited to join the fun.

Michele Gard, Head of Community Fundraising at The Countess of Brecknock Hospice Trust said: “It’s thanks to companies like the Newbury Building Society that the hospice can be here when help is needed most. We are delighted to have their support at this year’s 10@10 Late Night Walk and we are really grateful for the donation.”

About the Community Support Scheme Michele continued: “It’s great that smaller charities have an opportunity to apply for funding that is simple and easy to do. You can be excluded from many grants because of size or reach. So, this scheme was really important to us.”

Emma Simms, Marketing and Communications Manager at Newbury Building Society said: “Congratulations to The Countess of Brecknock Hospice Trust for another highly successful event! We were delighted to award the charity with a cheque for £350 to be able to fund amenities for participants to fully enjoy the long walk. The charity sits at the heart of its local community and the care it provides is invaluable to those with life-limiting illness. For us, sponsoring the 10@10 Late Night Walk has played a very small part in helping the charity continue with its worthwhile work.”

The Community Support scheme, which was launched in 2017, provides financial assistance to a wide range of local organisations involved in improving community life within its branch towns. Typical award amounts start from £100 with a cap of £500.  Applications for the Society’s Community Support scheme funding are considered twice a year in May and November, and an application form can be found on the dedicated webpage. Projects that promote and encourage sporting activity and in the arts, support education and development, and benefit the local environment within the Society’s branch towns will be considered.
