Newbury Building Society spreads Christmas cheer with three Giving Trees

Local radio station, The Breeze, and Newbury Building Society's Basingstoke branch wrap presents for the Christmas Giving Tree Appeal 2017

Newbury Building Society was determined to help give local disadvantaged children a Christmas to remember, by hosting three different Giving Tree projects - and did so in terrific fashion.

The Breeze visited two of the Society’s branches during December. The Basingstoke branch flexed their wrapping muscles during the final day of donations to ensure each gift under the tree was ready to be sent to The Bluebells - Sebastian’s Act Trust, and Home-Start UK, while the team in Andover collected toys for Naomi House & Jacksplace.

In Basingstoke, The Breeze commented: “Thanks for all your wrapping skills today!” while Andover received praise for the local community’s effort: “It was great to see so many people stopping by then nipping off the bring gifts back.”

The Wokingham branch worked with Barnardo’s High Close School on a similar appeal which involved members of the public choosing a tag from many hanging off the tree, buy the gift on the tag and return it to the tree unwrapped.

This year was the best ever with over 2500 tags being taken and over 3000 gifts bought. Local charities including Home Start, Dingley Family and specialist early years centre, Transform Housing and Support, Barbados and Alexander Devine all benefited from the kind donations made during the festive season.

Gill McKernan, from Barnardo’s High Close School organised the appeal and commented: “Thank you for your support of the Giving Tree 2017. I know that thanks to you, so many children would have had a wonderful present to open on Christmas Day. I would like to thank you on behalf of all the children who received a gift, who as you can appreciate, can't thank you personally.”

Emma Simms, Marketing and Communications Manager at Newbury Building Society said: “We’re delighted with the positive response all three Giving Trees received during December. The Society prides itself on putting the community at the heart of everything we do, therefore, we understand the benefit such appeals make too many local people. We would like to thank both The Breeze and Barnardo’s High Close School for their impeccable support and organisation of the trees, as well as thank those who kindly donated gifts.”
