How to manage your mental health during Covid-19

The Government has been clear that the single most important action to take in fighting Coronavirus is to stay at home and social distancing measures were implemented to limit the spread and speed of contagion. 

Unlike anything we have experienced before, this has meant separation from friends and family, self-isolation, adapting to new ways of working, being furloughed and in some cases, unemployment.  

Peculiar, overwhelming and confusing, this is bound to influence our mental health.  

So, what can we do to help ourselves during these challenging times? 

The NHS’ Every Mind Matters mental health support hub has outlined tips and advice on things you can do to keep on top of your mental wellbeing while staying at home.  

We wanted to share this practical advice so you can not only help yourself, but also others around you: 

  1. Find out about your employment and benefits rights to help feel more in control of your money 

  1. Limit your news intake and remember social media can be a source of fake news 

  1. Stay connected with friends and family via software such as Zoom and Whatsapp – however, if it becomes overwhelming don’t be afraid to use the ‘mute’ option 

  1. Talk about your concerns. You can find a list of NHS approved helplines here 

  1. Try and implement a new daily routine 

  1. Look after your body and try to maintain a regular sleeping pattern 

  1. Find something to keep your brain active – puzzles, crafting, DIY 

  1. Carry on with the things you enjoy or learn something new
