Inclusion and diversity

Developing a welcoming environment that inspires us to deliver great customer outcomes.
Diversity and Inclusion at Newbury Building Society

At Newbury Building Society, we understand it’s our people that make a difference to our members.

That’s why we’re committed to developing and maintaining an inclusive environment which inspires us to deliver great customer outcomes.

A sense of belonging is key to shaping our vibrant culture

We want to nurture a culture which promotes a positive work/life balance, provides opportunity for enrichment and amplifies our employee's voices.

Our working environment should be respectful and innovative, with every individual feeling recognised, appreciated, and motivated to perform at their best.

They say that great minds think alike...

We disagree.

We want our people to bring wide-ranging experience so that we have a variety of perspectives to draw from when we making important decisions.

Some things we've done to enhance our workplace culture:

  • Introduced a Menopause Cafe, where colleagues can share lived experience in a judgement-free space.
  • Introduced TeamsWork, our employee feedback forum.
  • Trained 12 new Mental Health First Aiders to support colleagues.
  • Introduced a Cash Health Plan to support physical and mental wellbeing.
  • Established a Diversity and Inclusion Working Party.
  • Ran external training to educate and challenge our Board and Executive team on diversity and inclusion ambitions.
  • Continued to implement and develop family-friendly policies such as flexible working and enhanced maternity and paternity leave.
  • Encouraged employees to disclose Equal Opportunities data so that we can measure how fairly we treat employees and make improvements where needed.

Inclusion: what it means to us

Inclusion is a sense of belonging. An inclusive working environment is one in which everyone feels valued, that their contribution matters and they are able to perform to their full potential, no matter their background, identity or circumstances. An inclusive workplace enables a diverse range of people to work together effectively. The Society’s working practices and procedures enable inclusivity and are founded on our core value of respect.

Equity: what it means to us

Equity means focusing on supporting employees to achieve success while recognising that each person has a different starting point. We therefore provide support using a person centred approach.
